How Sergey Korolev Launched Yuri Gagarin
Into Space and Changed the World

In November 1945, in Germany, at one of the movie shows held in the Soviet occupation zone, Korolev first saw Woman in the Moon, a film by the famous German director Fritz Lang.

The movie, made in 1929, was amazing for realistic technical details of the rocket launch. The most dramatic part was the ending, when some of the characters faced problems returning to Earth, and had to be left behind. When the show was over, Korolev, much to the surprise of the audience, said out loud,

«That’s something we will have to work a lot on… How to return from space…»

Korolev did not know yet that over the next 20 years he would have to create a full-blown «space empire» of hundreds of manufacturing and design facilities, develop and build rockets that no one had ever built before, launch the first satellite and the first cosmonaut into space.
